Aquaponics 4 You is an Aquaponics setup guide created by Aquaponics enthusiast, John Fay.
This setup guide is based around a 53 page report that takes you through setting up a system from start to finish.
John Fay gets started by giving an overview of the following:
- Location Considerations
- Food Produced
- Key Concepts Simplified
- The Chemistry and Physics Behind Aquaponics
The next module covers setting up the system. In this module John covers:
- The Best Fish to Use
- Plants – How They’ll Grow
- Required Hardward and Components
Then John moves on to discuss building your system:
- Key Design Considerations
- Tank Layout (important to get this right)
- Connecting the Grow Bed
- Connecting the Return Pipes
Finally John covers how to add the water, the fish, and the plants:
- Water – the things you need to do as well as mistakes to avoid
- Floats
- Nitrifying Bacteria (simplified – easy to understand)
- Adding the Fish
- Seedlings
- Testing and Optimizing
Overall Aquaponics 4 You is a comprehensive and detailed guide backed up with photos and diagrams to make things easy for you every step of the way.
The guide detailed above is a PDF, the main convenience of this is that you get it instantly, no need to wait. A DVD is also sent out to you, in my case the DVD took about a week to arrive (it may take slightly longer depending on where you’re located).

General Information About Aquaponics:
Aquaponics works by making use of a natural cycle which is self-sustaining and involves a combination of both fish and plants. Aquaponics is considered to be an eco-friendly alternative to traditional farming techniques, both in terms of aquaculture and agriculture, which both require a large area of land, water and power.
Aquaponics works by using a combination of hydroponics and aquaculture. The two systems are combined by creating a relationship between the plants and the fish. The fish are reared in a tank and their excreted waste sinks to the bottom of the tank where it then sits in the gaps between the gravel and stones. Whilst the waste is sitting there, a process known as nitrification takes place and this is a chemical process during which bacteria is introduced to the cycle.
The bacteria undergo a three-stage cycle where the solid waste is broken down (this waste includes uneaten fish food). The first part of the cycle is that it is turned into ammonia before it is turned into nitrites and then nitrates. It’s the nitrates that are taken in by the plants and used as nutrients.
Once these have all been removed from the water, the next part of the process is that the cleaned water is then pumped back into the fish where the cycle then starts all over again. The cleaning of the water is very important for the fish because without this being done the pH levels in the water would become too high and this would be toxic for the fish.
There are a number of advantages to using Aquaponics…
One of the advantages is that this system uses only a small amount of water compared to traditional methods of farming. The water loss using this method is very minimal, as the water only needs to be topped up in order to replace the water that has evaporated naturally. Another advantage of this system is that the amount of land required is greatly reduced and this benefits the environment as well as the bank balance as it is cheaper.
Due to the system only needing a small amount of space it means that even homeowners have the ability to use this system. Therefore, everyone has the ability to grow their own fresh vegetables and become self sufficient, which in turn will save money as there will be no need to buy fresh vegetables. Due to the financial problems that an increasing amount of people are facing this system is something that is becoming popular as a way to grow your own veggies and save money.
